Men puff up their success on LinkedIn, while women undersell

Men puff up their success on LinkedIn, while women undersellMen puff up their success on LinkedIn, while women undersellWhen it comes to self-promotion, men have an advantage. LinkedIns analysis of millions of its U.S. member profiles found that men brag far mora than women do when talking about their work experience.Men brag about their successesU.S. men on LinkedIn use their profiles to shine the stories of their careers in the most positive light. LinkedIn said men tend to skew their professional brands to highlight more senior-level experience, often removing junior-level roles altogether. In other words, they talk about their jobs at the biggest and most famous companies in the world, and leave off their humble beginnings. It makes men appear as if they sprung, fully formed, into a successful career.Men, who had larger networks overall than women, were also found to be more aggressive about tooting their horn and touting their skills.Women dont brag about their successes - with good reasonMeanwhile, women kept it short and simple on their profiles, even to the point of underselling the accomplishments they had earned. They had shorter profiles summaries than men. And even when they had similar jobs and skill levels, LinkedIn said women would still include 11% less of their skills than men on their profiles.Women are putting themselves at a networking disadvantage when they dont talk about their successes. These absences on their profiles add up and have far-reaching consequences for networking success.Workers use LinkedIn to network for jobs and new opportunities. LinkedIn said the people who had five or more skills got 17 times more profiles views. One of those views could lead to a connection, or a message, or even a job.But they could be keeping mum because they recognize what gender bias research has foundwomen who act assertive, tough, and self-confident - traits that are traditionally seen as masculine- face backlash at work and have a harder time ge tting a promotion. Women may not being bragging like men because they feel like they would be penalized for it - and research shows theyre not wrong.Women are also likely to avoid job listings with aggressive words and undersell their own talents, as studies have noted even the wording of job ads can drive qualified women away.Women need to self-advocate for their success to get that promotion, or a new job. No one knows youre doing a good job unless you tell them and remind them. But we also need a culture thats accepting of their success to welcome them.

Setting Up Informational Law Interviews

Setting Up Informational Law InterviewsSetting Up Informational Law InterviewsYou might be asking whether the informational interview is the same thing as a regular interview. Its not. The informational interview is what it sounds like - a brief talk meant to get more information on the firm. But what you should understand is that your chances of getting a real interview are much improved once you have face-to-face contact with a member of your desired firm. Not only can you learn exactly what opportunities in which departments exist, but you get the chance to make a direct impression with someone from the firm. Its proven fact that we feel a stronger urge to help someone weve honigwein or whom we know, rather than a stranger or a stray resume from the ether. How do you go about setting up informational interviews? You have the best resources right at your fingertips - Martindale-Hubbell and your alumni directory. Dont be afraid to tap into your alumni network, whether its from your undergraduate or law school. You might suspect that youre somehow bothering these busy lawyers, but dont be. Youll find that most of your fellow alums will be happy to take 20 to 30 minutes out of their schedules to give you some solid career advice. The best way to proceed Compose a letter or e-mail (depending on which address youve located) explaining who you are, what school youve both attended, and what your immediate career goals are. Make sure you emphasize that you are not asking for a job, but only for information. Leave your phone number and email address. Remember that everyone was in the same boat as you were not too long ago - and many law firms, despite the slackening of the labor market, still pay their lawyers premiums for bringing in qualified candidates. Even if youve got on-campus interviews lined up, its worth investigating the informational interview route. Good luck

ASME Foundation to Sponsor High School FIRST Team ASME Foundation to Sponsor High School FIRST Team ASME Foundation to Sponsor High School FIRST TeamASME and the ASME Foundation have had a long-standing relationship with the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competitions. The competition connects practicing engineers and university faculty and students with high school students to build innovative robotic devices to compete in sophisticated mechanical challenges.Through the years, ASME members have volunteered their time by serving as mentors to individual gruppes, as judges or referees at FIRST events across the country, and in other areas that promote the mission of FIRST to inspire young people to be engineering, science and technology leaders. Each year, the ASME Foundation awards five scholarships in the amount of $5,000 each to graduating high school seniors whose FIRST experience has inspired an interest in pursuing a career in mechani cal engineering. The ASME Foundation is now taking this relationship to the next level by sponsoring and supporting an individual FIRST team. Dunbar High School, a public high school that was founded in 1865, has a curriculum that emphasizes a commitment to developing individual talent and strengths in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). What to Do If Your Internship Is a Waste of Time

What to Do If Your Internship Is a Waste of TimeWhat to Do If Your Internship Is a Waste of TimeNow that we are in internship season, thousands of college students are just beginning their internships for the summer. With the arrival of summer, many college students and even recent grads are abfluging their internships in a variety of industries and organizations. Its that time when interns are developing new knowledge and skills, improving their resumes, connecting with professionals in the field, and perhaps getting closer to being offered a full-time job after the internship is over. But each year there are a number of internships that students begin and quickly find out that they are not the same as what was described in the original interview. Many students begin their internships with high expectations and then quickly learn that this is not going to be the internship that they dreamed about. The good news is that its not a job and will only be lasting between eight to twelve w eek, but the schwimmbad news is that the time spent at the internship leaves a lot to be desired and doesnt include any real learning or additional skill development. Here are signs your internship may be a dead end and what to do. You Are Only Given Menial Tasks With No Room for Growth or Learning It doesnt matter who you are, there are always those menial tasks that need to get done and someone at some time is going to have to chip in and do them. As the company intern, those menial tasks may fall on your shoulders, which offers you an opportunity to show your dedication by putting on a smile and just pitching in and getting the work done. beschluss If you find that all you are doing is answering phones, making coffee, emptying the garbage, and filing it may be time to write down your expectations based on your interview and have an honest discussion with your supervisor. There Is No Formal Job Description or Work Assignments Planned In order to do anything well, there nee ds to be some type of guidelines to follow. In order to be successful at any internship or job, there must be clear expectations. Without clear expectations as to the work that the organization would like to have accomplished, you are doomed to failure due to confusion. You may not be doing what the employer is expecting you to accomplish. Resolution Make it your responsibility at the start of your internship to ask what the employer would like you to accomplish. Ask for assigned tasks and have your supervisor define his/her expectations. Ask for both big assignments and smaller ones that you can do when theres a lull to keep yourself busy. If you find yourself with time on your hands, do some research and get your hands on professional literature, information about the company, or any other resource that will help you learn more about whats trendy and what some of the challenges are in the industry. Your Internship Requires Less Than Part-Time Hours It takes time to learn how t o do anything well and the less time you have to learn the relevant knowledge and skills required to do a specific job, the less time you will have to master those important skills that are needed for you to do an excellent job. Resolution If the interviewer originally told you that you would be getting approximately 25 hours per week at your internship but you find you are only getting 12, its time to schedule a meeting with your supervisor to discuss the number of hours and to let him/her know that they are not what was originally agreed on and that they do not meet your expectations. There Is No Feedback and Very Little Time Spent With Your Supervisor. Nothing can be more frustrating than not knowing if you are meeting the expectations of your supervisor. You may be keeping yourself busy but if you dont know exactly what you should be doing it will hold you back on how much effort you put in, and youll have no idea if you are doing a good job. Resolution Schedule a time to m eet with your supervisor and let them know that you would like to meet regularly to go over your work and to get some feedback. This should be done sooner rather than later so that you have the direction you need to do a good job. You Feel Threatened on the Job Resolution This one is a no-brainer. If there is any reason that you feel threatened on the job, go to your supervisor immediately and let him/her know that you can no longer work there and explain the situation if you are comfortable to do so. Whatever the circumstances, if you do decide to leave your internship, make sure that you do so in a professional manner. Ask to speak with your supervisor directly and if at all possible be prepared to give one to two weeks notice. If the situation is compromising your safety or physical or mental well-being, then its best to let your supervisor know why you feel that you need to leave the internship immediately. A sample resignation letter can be a way to leave the organization o n a positive note.
